BECCA BARNES AND ALWYN DALE - MAKE OUR HORROR MOVIE!

Hello Make My Movie team. You were expecting a showreel and you got this page instead. You lucky devils.

We (Becca Barnes & Alwyn Dale) have been writing together since 2008, after attending Film School and then going on to complete the same screenwriting degree. We've put this page together because we don't have a slick showreel to show you - we're just two writers, and we have far more on paper than on screen. Together, we're on a crusade against the mundane. We're never happy making things we feel we've seen before and we're never happy watching those things either. We believe that there's little point in rehashing well trodden territory unless it has a fresh and original spin on it. For this reason, many of the stories we write together have a quirky point of difference. Like poltergeists. And telekinesis. And tentacles. And that makes Make My Horror Movie bloody perfect for us.

Our goal is to create content we'd read about and be desperate to see ourselves. Both of us watch hundreds of films a year, and we make a point to not just see Hollywood films and New Zealand films. We watch new, weird and wacky content from all of the world. Becca's about to fly off to Fantastic Fest for the first time and have a blast. We also read copious books, comics, and ‘Internets’. This way we see a wider scope of stories, which feeds into what we write, hopefully creating something unique and intriguing. Plus, we write a shitload of stuff. We hold 48 Hour Script-a-thons at our place where we get a whole bunch of writers over to write a feature film each in 48 hours. We firmly believe that the best way to get better at what we do is write, not just talk about writing.

We want to be the sort of up and coming filmmakers who aren’t predictable. It’s true our hearts lie with the extraordinary, but what’s truly important to us is telling stories that we haven’t heard before, and that engage us. Filmmakers like Rian Johnson and Ben Wheatley are great inspirations to us, because they never do the same thing twice. We’d love to be like them when we grow up.

Mostly, we get a kick out of writing things that make people go "Wait, you're writing about what?!?"

We'd love to make the final 12 with either of our two entries BIRTHDAY DEATHDAY and THE LACTATING. We'd kill for the chance to work with you to find a great director and a great producer right for our type of storytelling. Would we literally kill? Well, perhaps we should have a chat in person. Let's just say we're not ruling it out.

Here's a quick combined CV you are welcome to completely ignore:
